ATTENTION: Serious Dali/Surrealism collectors

I am a private art dealer in Los Angeles and have sold, for example, all three of the backdrops Dali designed for the dream sequence in Hitchcock's "Spellbound". I often am offered significant works by this Surrealist master and would be most interested in knowing of anyone who is in this forum who is a serious collector of the works of Dali and/or Surrealist artworks.

Please email Elaine Sokoloff at ElaineAS@aol.com

Looking forward to speaking with you!

Hello members of this Tribe,
I joined a few days ago and wanted to get things going by asking if you would view my profile,my artwork, and if interested, send me a friend invitation. My main purpose in joining Tribe is to meet other artists for artistic communication. I have added two links in this post to images of my Dream Matter artwork.
Thanks....Steve

This has been bugging me for a while. I seem to recall hearing a story about either Dali or Picasso being asked to design new uniforms (or asked for an opinion on new uniforms) for paratroopers in, I think, France. His retort was "I would dress them like harlequins" (or something like that) - the idea being that that which is most obvious is the best hidden.

Can anyone confirm, deny or clarify this bit of modern mythology?

Yes, there is a museum in Spain, The Dalí Theatre-Museum. It's very cool and very interactive. One thing that stands out is the Marilyn Monroe piece where you climb up stairs and look at a viewfinder pointed at the floor at a multi--media piece of Marilyn.

Here's a good link for all things Dali:
www.salvador-dali.org/eng/index.html

I first was exposed to Women in Surrealist Movement through an exhibition at the SF Moma. I bought the exhibition book "Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement”, Whitney Chadwick. It gives an excellent account of the contributions of women, from artist to muse. If you’re interested in this, I'd definitely check it out.

It was at this exhibition that I discovered one of my favorite artists, Remedios Varo. However, I also am infatuated with Leonora Carrington and Frida Kahlo.

I've only recently become acquainted with the tribe and by doing a search I discovered there was a tribe for Salvador Dali enthusists! My artwork is not the same style as his, nor do I feel I'm as 'out there' as Dali was. But I do admire the man's ability to alter his reality and turn it into something hauntingly beautiful at times. What a genius!

Anyways, I just wanted to say hello to others in the neighborhood that also are fans of his. Take care.

Ive been an admirer of Dali for about two years now, I think alot of what his art expresses can teach everyone something about themselves if we let it. It can be shocking to try to let the true meaning of some of his work reflect something inside of us but the shivers I get let me know that something in my subconscious knows its true.

What pieces do you guys and girls hold alot of meaning to?

big big big huge fan of dali, glad to see there is a tribe for all passions...

Had the pleasure of visiting one of his museums in paris... spent all day there, obviously.

Contributed one of my new favorites i found on a dali website, it is called Masked Mermaid in Black, 1939... hope you all like.

I have always been a big fan of 'One second before waking from a dream...', used to have it up in my place but, the more i moved the more it got wrecked... the only one i have now is called Metamorphosis of Narcissus, and it is the classic (if you are very familliar with dali) one with fingers holding a sprouting egg and on the left is the same form, only it is a kneeling crouched man...

Anybody know exactly what drugs he was doing towards the end?

Dali Quotes

At the age of six I wanted to be a cook. At seven I wanted to be Napoleon. And my ambition has been growing steadily ever since.

Democratic societies are unfit for the publication of such thunderous revelations as I am in the habit of making.

Don't bother about being modern. Unfortunately it is the one thing that, whatever you do, you cannot avoid.

Drawing is the honesty of the art. There is no possibility of cheating. It is either good or bad.

Each morning when I awake, I experience again a supreme pleasure - that of being Salvador Dali.

Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it.

I believe that the moment is near when by a procedure of active paranoiacthought, it will be possible to systematize confusion and contribute to thetotal discrediting of the world of reality.

I do not paint a portrait to look like the subject, rather does the person grow to look like his portrait.

I don't do drugs. I am drugs.

I have Dalinian thought: the one thing the world will never have enough of is the outrageous.

I seated ugliness on my knee, and almost immediately grew tired of it.

In order to acquire a growing and lasting respect in society, it is a good thing, if you possess great talent, to give, early in your youth, a very hard kick to the right shin of the society that you love. After that, be a snob.

Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.

It is good taste, and good taste alone, that possesses the power to sterilize and is always the first handicap to any creative functioning.

Let my enemies devour each other.

Liking money like I like it, is nothing less than mysticism. Money is a glory.

Mistakes are almost always of a sacred nature. Never try to correct them. On the contrary: rationalize them, understand them thoroughly. After that, it will be possible for you to sublimate them.

Painting is an infinitely minute part of my personality.

Progressive art can assist people to learn not only about the objective forces at work in the society in which they live, but also about the intensely social character of their interior lives. Ultimately, it can propel people toward social emancipation.

Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision.

Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic.

The difference between false memories and true ones is the same as for jewels: it is always the false ones that look the most real, the most brilliant.

The first man to compare the cheeks of a young woman to a rose was obviously a poet; the first to repeat it was possibly an idiot.

The only difference between me and a madman is that I'm not mad.

The secret of my influence has always been that it remained secret.

The terrifying and edible beauty of Art Nouveau architecture.

The thermometer of success is merely the jealousy of the malcontents.

There are some days when I think I'm going to die from an overdose of satisfaction.

There is only one difference between a madman and me. The madman thinks he is sane. I know I am mad.

This grandiose tragedy that we call modern art.

Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing.

Wars have never hurt anybody except the people who die.

We are all hungry and thirsty for concrete images. Abstract art will have been good for one thing: to restore its exact virginity to figurative art.

What is a television apparatus to man, who has only to shut his eyes to see the most inaccessible regions of the seen and the never seen, who has only to imagine in order to pierce through walls and cause all the planetary Baghdads of his dreams to rise from the dust.

If a movie is ever made about our Salvador, who should play him?
Not sure who I'm voting for yet, but I did tell Brock that Johnny Depp might do well with yet another freaky role..

Please tell ten friends to tell ten today. The Breast Cancer site
is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to
meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to
an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to
their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink
window in the middle). This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to
donate a mammogram in exchange for advertising. Here's the web
site! Please pass it along to 10 people you know.

www.thebreastcancersite.com

It would be great if all the Spreadheads clicked!
Please!!:)

Has anyone beside myself had dreams either starring the man or set in a Dali-esque dreamscape? I seem to recall one of mine recently set in a space not unlike that of the Temptation of Saint Anthony, minus the spindly-legged elephants. I don't remember many details aside from the overall angst I felt throughout.

if anyone wants to see some good Dali pictures, I've trawled the web for good images, and put many of them in my tribe photo album. Of course, you're welcome to download any that you like. One day, maybe I'll get around to uploading some of them to this tribes photo album.
